Adrian Leaman – Facebook Search
Friday, March 18th, 2011A patent that Facebook was awarded about a month ago, called “Visual tags for search results generated from social network information,” is suddenly getting some industry attention.
The official description of the patent says:
Search results, including sponsored links and algorithmic search results, are generated in response to a query, and are marked based on frequency of clicks on the search results by members of social network who are within a predetermined degree of separation from the member who submitted the query. The markers are visual tags and comprise either a text string or an image.
Greg Sterling at Search Engine Land calls it a patent on social search – an area, where Google is placing more focus these days (with good reason).
I’ve talked about how important it is for the search engines to get social search right, and without Facebook data, it seems unlikely that Google will be able to do that – at least as long as Facebook continues to be the dominant form of social communication. Luckily, there are third party tools emerging to help bridge the gap.
I’ve also talked about how Facebook could become an important contender in the search market. This patent only adds more fuel to the fire in that department. Facebook has been doing other things to improve its search feature, and this isn’t the first search-related patent for the company either.
The bottom line is that with so much social interaction going on among true friends and family, the most trusted (by any given user) opinions are most likely to be obtained via Facebook than on any other site on the web. That information is incredibly valuable for many types of searches.

adrian leaman blog
Monday, May 24th, 2010if you needed another reason to blog for your business, here’s one. You will have noticed that Google has rolled out its redesigned search results page. Like other search engines such as Yahoo, visitors now see a left-hand navigation panel on the hugely popular Google site.
While most of the features on this revamped page are not new, many are now far more prominent. Some of the options are fairly standard, such images, videos, maps, and news. But there is much greater emphasis now being placed on other types of results such as, blogs, updates and discussions.
Google Blog Search has been around for a while but now users will notice it more – and will be much more likely to use it for searching. Instead of having to go to the Google Blog search engine itself or the “click to show options” link from a Google SERP, Blogs is simply a visible option for any given query. That means if people want to see commentary for the subject they searched for, there’s a good chance they’ll go to this set of results. So it’s time all businesses where blogging, isn’t it?

Google tv
Saturday, May 22nd, 2010It’s time to start optimizing your web content for the big screen. Here at Google I/O, as I’m sure you’ve heard, Google announced the much-anticipated Google TV. Naturally, search plays a big role in the service, particularly in the form of the Quick Search Box.
Here are a few things to think about if Google TV really takes off:
- Optimizing video content is going to be more important than ever – not just optimizing the content itself, in terms of quality, but making your videos visible in search results in Google and YouTube.
- Simply making sure your site looks good on big screen TVs. Google made the analogy of optimizing a site for mobile. This will be a similar undertaking. Basically, you want to make sure your content looks good no matter what kind of screen you’re viewing.

Social Media Marketing
Monday, May 3rd, 2010First post here and it’s election day. Facebook is showing a 40 odd % support for Lib Dems, lets see how this pans out in the real world.
Interesting to see that on my Adrian Leaman facebook page, I am being bombarded with political party adverts on the right hand panel of my page….
